Dr. Joseph Derian completed his doctorate studies at the University of Southern California, earning a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, where he was awarded the "Helen Hislop Scholarship" and was inducted into the "Order of the Golden Cane" He has also earned a bachelor’s of science in Health and Human Sciences from Loyola Marymount University.
Joe then completed a year-long Orthopedic Residency at USC to further specialize and improve his ability to help his patients with musculoskeletal diagnoses. During the residency, he practiced as an independent clinician, shadowed orthopedic surgeons, taught in the DPT program at USC, and conducted research in physical therapy. In, 2018, Joe became a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.
Other than working as a clinician, he currently holds an adjunct faculty position at USC, teaching in the first year of the DPT program. He has a continuing research project at USC that is studying how PTs learn manipulation skills, to better teach students the hands-on skills PTs need. Though he is specialized in Orthopaedics, he enjoys working with patients of all types, and has also worked in neurological, vestibular, and pediatric settings.
In his free time, Joe enjoys tinkering with his self-built computer, brewing his own beer, trying new ways to exercise and stay healthy, and is always looking for new and interesting places to eat and drink in Los Angeles.
